Very Large Translation Memory Project

The Wordfast VLTM, as the name implies, offers translators a Very Large Translation Memory, in a server-based TM environment, accessible over the internet. The VLTM may only be accessed from Wordfast's desktop TM application, and is a feature not available with other CAT tools.

Private anonymous VLTM's may be created, password protected, and used by translators for real time collaboration in a server-based TM environment. Competitor prices for server-based Translation Memory applications typically start in the tens of thousands of dollars. Wordfast puts this power in the hands of the professional linguist for merely the price of a desktop license.

VLTM use is free and anonymous.

Translators can work in the exact same manner as they normally would when leveraging off of a local TM. However, in addition to their desktop TM, they can leverage even more content from a very large public TM. The best way to describe the public VLTM may be "Wikipedia with the speed of Google" for translation memory assets. The server-based VLTM does not replace the local TM; it works with local TM to help optimize re-use.

Ground rules of the VLTM project:

• Confidentiality
  Unless you specifically set your settings to share your TM, either publicly or with a workgroup, your TM's will not be recorded. VLTM is a one-way process. You only receive translation segments from the VLTM. Your client's intellectual property is safe.
  
  
• Gratuity
  Connection to the VLTM is free and anonymous. While the VLTM business model may change, the project is now available pro bono to Wordfast users. Other than the cost of single Wordfast desktop license, there is no other investment required to reap the productivity benefit of millions of TM segments that have been donated.
  
  
• Goodwill
  In order to keep the VLTM a pro bono project, users are welcome to donate translation memories to expand the available database, or to set up Wordfast to write to the VLTM when the material in question is not confidential.
